What exactly the numbers mean for us?

With the increasing number of Engineering Colleges in Tamilnadu, courses and fields that are offered today, students’ requirement for getting information about the colleges has increased by leaps and bounds. There is more information available today than ever, thanks to the web which helps largely to disseminate the information more effectively and quickly. However, the daunting search over the web (or some times over informed) may yield very similar line of information and especially the facts revealed by numbers may not be looked accurately and seriously. This series would bring the facts behind the numbers pertains to Tamilnadu Engineering Colleges and their features.

How did colleges become so competitive?

The 1980s saw not only an increase in the number of engineering aspirants, but also an increase in the percentage that decided to attend such colleges. Today Tamilnadu has as many 454 colleges under different category – University Departments, Government, Aided and Self financing Colleges with remarked differences in their numbers. Among what we have now, the establishment of self financing colleges in the state started in 80s with hardly 4% of colleges; this number has a steady increase in the subsequent period; another 20% by the 90s, and remaining 76 % have started with in a decade 2000 - 2009.

The Split-up of the affiliating Anna University in to four regions (CHE-Chennai, CBE-Coimbatore, TRY-Trichy, TVL-Tirunelveli) the numbers have still interesting insights to understand which parts of the state have more thrust on this establishment.

The statistics regarding the sale of engineering admission TNEA 2010 application forms (Over 1, 90,000) indicates the further and steady growth in these areas and the number of college-bound graduates is expected to gradually increase over the next few years we may still expect more number of colleges in the state. All these make the present day colleges more and more competitive in establishing their infrastructure, faculty, and many other amenities.

What can students do now?

Be informed. There is more information available today than ever, attend every information offered to know which courses students should take and to decide which into college later during counseling . Pay attention to the different levels of academic subjects. Besides gathering information, understand your faculty of interest – mechanical or circuit branches or computing etc by fixing your career and professional goal. Compare the colleges which are available based on their basic details such as course available, when it was started (quite essential to analyze the performance) and if possible the quality certifications too (its all available today in the form of accreditation process) and of course your interest and ability to handle the courses - care a great deal about the level of difficulty in completing course work. Note that colleges prefer to see a student become accomplished in one activity rather than dabble at a variety of interests.

Remember, with many people involved in this pool of information its YOU to embark the journey in a chosen course and a successful profession – Do it with very great care! All the Best.
